Modelling and optimization of a passive structural control design for a spar-type floating wind turbine

Abstract Compared with fixed-bottom installation, deep water floating wind turbine has to undergo more severe structural loads due to extra degrees of freedom. Aiming for effective load reduction, this paper deals with the evaluation of a passive structural control design for a spar-type floating wind turbine, and the proposed strategy is to install a tuned mass damper (TMD) into the spar platform. Firstly, a mathematical model for wind turbine surge-heave-pitch motion is established based on the D’Alembert’s principle of inertial forces. Vibration control of a base-isolated building using wavelets

Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.3182/20110828-6-IT-1002.03169 This paper proposes a numerical approach for finding an optimal control based on wavelet functions for vibration reduction of a base-isolated building subjected to actual earthquakes. The objective is two-fold: (1) to find a computational method using properties of Haar functions, and (2) to calculate controller gains approximately by solving only algebraic equations instead of solving the Riccati differential. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

Scour on alluvial bed downstream of grade-control structures

This paper describes an approach for predicting local scour downstream of grade control structures. The developed analysis applies the incomplete self-similarity (ISS) theory for deducing some physically based dimensionless groups controlling the geometrical pattern of the scour profile. The scour measurements available in the literature in conjunction with numerous unpublished data allow a multiregressive calibration of the ISS relationships. The experimental sample includes different bed grain-size distributions and scales of the erosive phenomenon. Hybrid Passive Control Strategies for Reducing the Displacements at the Base of Seismic Isolated Structures

In this paper, the use of hybrid passive control strategies to mitigate the seismic response of a base-isolated structure is examined. The control performance of three different types of devices used for reducing base displacements of isolated buildings is investigated. Specifically, the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), the New Tuned Mass Damper (New TMD) and the Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD), each one associated to a Base Isolated structure (BI), have been considered.
